Slaughter process

We are aware of our responsibility during the slaughter process and constantly strive to apply the maximum possible care here. During unloading, in the waiting pens and in the stunning and slaughter areas, the focus is on the well-being of the animal. Pig slaughter can be done either by CO2 or electrical stunning. In our plants, we have opted for electrical stunning because the suffocation process, which causes the pig to lose consciousness during CO2 stunning, is not an option for our company. During electrical stunning, the pig loses consciousness the moment it comes into contact with the stunning tong. As we stand for transparency in our activities, it is possible to follow the slaughter process in Graz via live videos.

Animal protection measures

  • Since the beginning of 2017, our company has installed a separate executive department for quality assurance that is responsible for animal welfare and hygiene tasks
  • Slaughterhouses are visited regularly and audited with a special focus on the area of animal welfare
  • In 2018,  an expert assessment of our own specialists in the area of animal welfare was conducted by the BSI-Schwarzenbek (Training and Consultancy Institute for Animal Welfare during Transport and Slaughter) within the framework of a self-assessment centre (audit over several days)

Training and selection of the employees

The personality and attitude of the people involved are of fundamental importance during the handling of live animals.

  • Careful selection of employees in this area
  • Introductory and accompanying courses of training
  • Many years of service with the company

Unloading / pen

  • Checking of the transport of live animals by a veterinary inspector or the animal welfare officer of the respective slaughterhouse
  • Supervisory inspection by the executive department for animal welfare / quality assurance
  • Unloading is always done in the presence of a responsible employee from the respective slaughterhouse
  • Separate bays for animals that are conspicuous in their behaviour
  • Easy and obstacle-free unloading of the pigs is done via a level ramp.
  • Use of prods: Electric prods are not used at our slaughterhouses neither during unloading nor generally in the pen area (chutes to the rest pens, chutes to and from the rest pens and up to and including the last chute)
  • In the pens, the maximum occupancy per waiting pen is defined and documented visibly
  • The waiting bays are equipped with balls to play with, amongst other things, as a means of keeping the pigs occupied
  • Supply and sprinkling with water
  • Green light mood
  • Calming background music

Stunning

  • The pig is guided to the stun box via a light-dark light regime.
  • In the last section, the pig is driven by a pneumatically operated push-assistance system which conveys the animal into the stun box.
  • The stun box is designed as a semi-automatic machine.
  • The effectiveness of the flow of electricity is measured by a computer control unit which isapproved for this purpose and only releases the electrode once there is a sufficient flow of electricity
  • Each individual stunning process is automatically logged and thus recorded
  • Directly after the animal becomes unconscious, it is stuck so that an optimum bleeding out of the animal is guaranteed.
  • On the bleeding-out conveyor belt, the unconsciousness is monitored and checked by a trained employee.
  • Monitoring and logging by official veterinarians and by the company's own quality managers
